Group Programs

Building social confidence

Group therapy is an essential therapeutic process for children to practise and generalise skills learnt in one-to-one sessions.  These semi-structured learning environments are specially designed with children’s sensory and communications needs in mind.  These programs allow our therapists to identify your child’s key strengths and challenges and assist in acquiring microskills to be successful in the wider social settings of every day life.

Critical social skills targeted in group therapy include:

  • Increasing self and social confidence
  • Improved attention and concentration
  • How to make and keep friends
  • How to use appropriate body language and gestures in social situations
  • Awareness of other’s feelings
  • Identifying and dealing with one’s feelings
  • Seeing things from other’s point of view (Perspective taking)
  • Being part of a group and turn taking
  • Sharing and learning to accept ‘no’
  • Negotiating in social situations
  • Reading non-verbal body cues
  • Following directions
  • Problem solving and reasoning
  • Whole body listening
  • Social thinking skills

School Readiness Groups for children commencing Prep and Grade One

Our specially developed school readiness program is perfect for children needing a little extra support before starting prep.  Our program helps children gain essential skills needed for success within a school setting.  These include paying attention and listening, following instructions in the classroom or playground, understanding the rules, making friends, interacting with peers confidently, expressing him/herself clearly.

The SOS Workshops and feeding groups are specially designed for fussy and picky eating

Lets Start Talking: Social Groups for preverbal children with a global developmental delay or Level 3 ASD to encourage signs and actions to express their needs.  These groups are designed to help children (1-5) learn how to be understood and participate in a group .

Fun with Food:  These group sessions are run by our dietitian and psychologist to help with anxiety around eating, parental stress, and mindfulness based eating approach for families.

Making Friends: Social skills, and performance in school have strong relationship with each other.  We design groups for different ages and skills that focus on their social thinking and improve their confidence with their peers.  These groups help children develop social reasoning by interpreting other people’s feelings,  understanding how the other person is thinking, pick up social cues from others, and understand the context in which these interactions take place.

First Steps:  Research has shown that early participation in instructional training is the key for non-verbal or lower verbal children (3yrs -5 yrs) to learn formative skills such as turn taking, listening, encouraging movement, gross motor skills, improving concentration and attention, and socialisation. This is especially true of children with higher communication and language needs as their social inclusion and ability to engage socially is severely restricted. This intensive social program is run by Dr Malini Singh and requires small groups with parental participation to build skills that are part of the individual programs for each child.

OUR GROUPS RUN THROUGHOUT THE YEAR and are based on the skills of each child and how we can build group activities that are suited to their needs.  We contact each family to discuss this individually and run groups that are optimal for their development.
